CRAIGIELEA COTTAGE
Craigielea
Blairgowrie lies on the west bank of the River Ericht in Perthshire, Rattray is on the east bank and the residential suburb of Rosemount lies between the A93 and the A923. The River Ericht is a tributary of the River Isla which is a tributary of the River Tay, famed for its salmon fishing. In 1928 the burgh of Blairgowrie and Rattray combined to make one small town. The town is situated on the Highland Line, the geographical fault which divides the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland. It is one of the gateways to the Celtic North and lies at the heart of the old kingdom of the Picts, which was for long the dominant power in Scotland before it was united with the Scots under Kenneth McAlpin in the 9th Century.

Glen Clova, one of the beautiful Angus Glens, is famous for its rugged, mountainous scenery. It is a u-shaped valley carved out during the Ice Age and it has many glacial features. The scenery becomes more and more spectacular as you travel up the glen and into Glen Doll which is the upper extension of Glen Clova.

There are Munros to climb, corries to explore, the Caenlochan Nature Reserve with its Ranger Service to visit and many walks are possible to places such as Braemar, Ballater, Loch Wharral, Loch Brandy, Glen Prosen and Glen Esk for the seasoned hill walker and Munro bagger. For the less adventurous there are shorter, more gentle walks in and around the glen.

Flowing through Glen Clova is the River South Esk which ends its journey to the sea at Montrose. This river provides fishing opportunities for anyone interested in angling and the Glen Clova Hotel is within 10 minutes walk from Roineach Mhor. Indeed, the ornithologist, botanist, naturalist, geologist, artist and tourist will not be disappointed with what the glen has to offer.

Kirriemuir, at 15 miles distance and with around 8000 inhabitants, is the nearest town. It boasts a Camera Obscura, a small Aviation Museum as well as the Kirriemuir Museum and was the birthplace of J.M.Barrie, author of Peter Pan and Wendy. Glamis Castle, the family home of the late Queen Mother, and the Angus Folk Museum in the village of Glamis are only 5 miles from Kirriemuir. Church services are held at Cortachy (10 miles) and in Kirriemuir and Forfar.
